Joseph Alfred McNeil is a retired Major General, United States Air Force Reserve. Maj Gen McNeil is also an icon of the civil rights movement. On February 1, 1960, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair, Jr., David Richard and Maj Gen McNeil, students at the Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina (now North Carolina A&T University) staged the country’s first sit-in demonstration at a Greensboro, NC Woolworth lunch counter.
Seventeen years old at the time, it took amazing courage and conviction to openly protest discrimination or mistreatment by southerners in the South. Maj Gen McNeil graduated from college with a degree in engineering physics. He then served his country as a military officer and as a member of Senior Executive Service within the Federal Aviation Administration.
The Maj General Joseph A. McNeil, Robins AFB Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. is named for Maj Gen McNeil in recognition of the stand he took for civil rights and diversity. It is also in recognition of a life reflecting the Tuskegee Airmen legacy of accepting every challenge and using it as an opportunity to excel. Maj Gen McNeil’s beacon of light will always shine in American history.
His life, service and commitment to helping others serve as a positive role model for the Chapter’s members and for others to follow. Maj Gen McNeil personifies the pursuit and attainment of excellence. He stood on the shoulders of others to make a difference in American society. The Chapter now stands on Maj Gen McNeil’s shoulders to make a difference in our community.
The Major General Joseph A. McNeil Chapter, Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. started as an experimental auxiliary chapter of the Atlanta Chapter, Tuskegee Airman, Inc. (ACTAI). After several years of managing logistical challenges the decision to seek separate chapter status to serve the local civilian and military community was reached.
The chapter goal is to motivate others to maintain the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen by educating others. This is done by providing educational assistance to qualifying students seeking careers in Science, Technology, Engineering Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) and Aviation, Aerospace,. We proudly stand on the shoulders of the Tuskegee Airmen and their values.
